The Difference Machine is a Berlin-based production company founded by Elena Lyubarskaya. We design the narrative architecture first — the characters, the world, the dramatic engine — then produce across formats: television, vertical drama, immersive experience. The IP is the architecture, not the script.
We create the story core and build from there. One narrative system that generates across formats, scales, and technologies. Creation and production aren't separate stages. They're one continuous act.
One methodology, several arms: we produce our own slate, run a studio for external clients, teach the craft, and publish what we learn. AI is a tool in the creator's hands — craft infrastructure, not a substitute for craft.
Elena Lyubarskaya is a screenwriter, producer, and creator based in Berlin. She writes television, develops original IP, and founded The Difference Machine.
Her credits include Pauline (Disney+, Grimme Preis-nominated), City of Blood (Disney+), and Frankfurter Files (ZDF). She graduated from Serial Eyes, the premium European TV writing program at DFFB Berlin, and trained in experimental theatre under Boris Yukhananov at the Stanislavsky Electrotheatre in Moscow.
That theatre training is where her approach to narrative systems began. Yukhananov's work treated storytelling as a live system: structures that generate narrative in real time, responding to what's happening in the room. Years later, Elena recognized the same principles at work in series architecture, in interactive narrative, in AI-driven experience. The methodology she built draws from all of it.
She has won the SteinbrennerMuller Award at Seriesly Berlin, the Immersive Tech Week Award at Stereopsia, and been selected for CPH:LAB and CPH:FORUM (ONX Studio Award, with Onassis Foundation). She develops projects across formats, from animated sitcom to AI-powered immersive experience.
She founded The Difference Machine to make a difference in how stories are told — because she believes the craft has to lead that change, not follow it.
Elena is the founder of The Difference Machine and a working artist. Both are true at the same time. She writes, she produces, she teaches, and she runs a company. The creative work and the company work aren't separate tracks. They're the same practice.
